A recipient of several national recognitions, including the prestigious Bangla Academy Literary Award, Haroon Habib has been a powerful voice in Bangladesh’s literature and journalism for past several decades . He is a veteran of Bangladesh’s Liberation War of 1971 who also had worked as the warfront journalist for the two prominent media outlets run by the wartime Bangladesh government the – Swadhin Bangla Beter Kendra and Joy Bangla Weekly . A committed writer and an authority in the field of liberation war research, Mr Habib authored more than 50 books – Short Stories, novels, essays, plays, poetries, research works etc -- the vast majority of which depict the time that Bangladesh, the former East Pakistan, had to pass through during the crucial 1971 and the periods that followed after the assassination of the nation’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975 . One of his major research works is on India’s role in the Bangladesh Liberation War and also the roles of the governments and people of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and Meghalaya, the four bordering states which had to shelter 10 million Bangladesh refuges who had to cross the international border to save lives from the genocidal Pakistani army.
Also a senior journalist and columnist, Mr Habib led the country’s national news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha(BSS) as the Chief Editor and Managing Director, worked as the Dhaka Correspondent of leading Indian newspaper THE HINDU and FRONTLINE magazine for nearly three decades, and also served as Bangladesh Correspondent of the German Radio, Deutsche Welle during his professional career .
A well known social and cultural activist, Mr Habib has been involved in the civil society and Freedom Fighters’ movement for the revival of the secular national spirit of 1971 and trial of the ‘war criminals’, to bring those offenders to justice who committed crimes against humanity as cohorts of the genocidal Pakistan army .
