Born in Kolkata, India, Rita graduated from Calcutta University in 1977, with meritorious distinction and government scholarship. She underwent extensive training under eminent national artists and art professors like Indra Dugar (Water Colourist), Ashesh Mitra (Prof, Calcutta Art College), Chitra Mazumdar (Prof, Calcutta Art College) and Bimal Dasgupta (Prof, Delhi Art College).
