Sara Rai is an Allahabad based writer, literary translator, and editor. She has published four collections of short stories, most recently Nabila aur Anya Kahaniyan (Nabila and Other Stories, Rajkamal 2022) and a novel in Hindi, Cheelvali Kothi (The House of Kites, Harper Hindi and Rajkamal 2011). The German translation by Johanna Hahn of her selected short fiction, Im Labyrinth (The Labyrinth, Draupadi Verlag 2019) won the Coburg Rückert Prize 2019, and was nominated for the Weltempfӓnger Prize, Frankfurt 2020. She has translated from Hindi five collections of short stories into English, most recently in 2019, Vinod Kumar Shukla’s Blue is like Blue (with Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, Harper Collins 2019) which won the Atta Galatta Prize 2019 of the Bangalore Literary Festival in the category of fiction and the Mathrubhumi Book of the Year Award 2020. Her essay about her engagement with languages On Not Writing has appeared in The Book of Indian Essays: Two Hundred Years of English Prose (Black Kite and Hachette 2020) edited by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra. Her memoir Raw Umber (Westland 2023) is her first original work in English.
