Anisha Shekhar Mukherji

Introduction

Anisha Shekhar Mukherji grew up in cantonments across India and finished her schooling at Loreto Convent and DPS R. K. Puram. An architect with a specialisation in conservation, she is an alumna of the School of Planning and Architecture Delhi, and an ODA Scholar from the De Montfort University, U.K. As Visiting Faculty at SPA Delhi since 18 years, she guides students in integrating critical inquiry, crafts and history in design thinking. Her work as an architectural historian, designer, author, speaker, teacher, curator of public dialogues and Founding Director at Ambi Knowledge Resources Pvt. Ltd — a publishing house that promotes the heritage of the subcontinent — positions her at the confluence of architecture, design, literature, and history.

Anisha has been conservation consultant to several organizations: The World Bank, Archaeological Survey of India, Doon School, The Park Hotels Apeejay Pvt Ltd. etc. She has authored several books starting from The Red Fort of Shahjahanabad published by Oxford University Press in 2003, one of the most detailed and authoritative works on this iconic Fort — whose much awaited second edition is slated to be launched at the BLF. Her other publications include books on historic architecture and astronomy, such as Jantar Mantar, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh’s Observatory in Delhi (Ambi 2010); and on art and craft traditions of India such as Attributing Design Identity; Identifying Design Attributes (Ambi 2020). She has also contributed writings to art and design journals and significant publications such as Shahjahanabad/ Old Delhi: Traditional and Colonial Change (Manohar, 2003) and A Work of Beauty: The Architecture and Landscape of Rashtrapati Bhavan (Publications Division, 2016), as well as written and translated children’s books such as Tenida and Friends (Ambi 2010) based on Narayan Gangopadhyaya’s much-loved Bengali stories. Her most recent book published by Routledge in 2023 is Renewing Design with Communities, co-edited with Snehanshu Mukherjee, which showcases equitable practices in architecture and local building traditions.
