About

Badri Narayan

Introduction

Badri Narayan is an important poet of Hindi literature, particularly notable among the poets who emerged in the 1990s. He is also an expert in social history and cultural anthropology. In addition to being a prominent poet of Hindi, he is recognized as a sociologist who identifies the foundational political understanding and constructions of North India. The sociological perspective, combined with the poet's emotions and sensitivity, infuses his research in social sciences and poetry with a powerful and sharp edge. The poet's grief often transforms into the grief of society. The culmination of love and the use of folk imagery grant the poet a distinct place in literature.

His significant work includes studies on Dalit studies, oral history, memories, communities, and the interrelations of power. His work on the biography of Kanshi Ram, the autobiographies of neglected communities, Bidesiya, and Bhojpuri culture has been widely discussed.

He was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award (Hindi) in 2022. He has published four poetry collections: *Tumdi Ke Shabd*, *Khudai Mein Hinsa*, *Shabdapadiyam*, and *Sach Sune Kai Din Hue*. Recently, Rajkamal Prakashan published his representative poems. He has received various awards including the Bharat Bhushan Award, Banarasi Prasad Bhojpuri Award, Kedaar Award, Spandan Kriti Award, Rashtrakavi Dinakar Award, Shamsher Award, and Meera Smriti Award. His poems have been translated into English, Bengali, Oriya, Malayalam, Urdu, and many other Indian languages. His columns on political analysis have been published in major Hindi and English newspapers and magazines such as Hindustan, Amar Ujala, Dainik Jagran, Indian Express, The Hindu, India Today, and Outlook. Several of his intellectual essays have also been published in book form.
