Janhwij Sharma

Introduction

Janhwij Sharma is a conservation architect by training and currently holds the position of Additional Director General (Conservation / World Heritage), Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Mr. Sharma joined ASI in April 2008 and in the last 16 years his prime responsibility is to finalise conservation programmes of all circles and monitoring conservation of ASI monuments within and outside the country. He has spearheaded the conservation works outside India too, noticeably in Cambodia wherein the conservation of Ta Prohm temple, a unique tree-temple site, has received acclaim from the UNESCO led ICC. He has undertaken a number of initiatives during his tenure in ASI, most important being the formulation of National Policy for the Conservation of Protected Monuments, Archaeological Sites and Remains which was adopted by the Government of India in 2014. Currently he is in working towards the preparation of conservation manual, and is assisting all field offices in developing Conservation Plans.

Mr. Sharma has been in charge of world heritage matters on behalf of ASI for the past 14 years and is the National Focal Point for India. During his tenure so far, 16 monuments and sites including six of the ASI's monuments, Rani ki Wav, Hill forts of Rajasthan (4 forts), Nalanda Mahavihara, Dholavira: A Harappan City, Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple, Hoysala Temples of Southern Karnataka and Moidams of Charaideo, Assam have become world heritage properties. Besides, he has guided and given technical support to a number of world heritage related proposals from different ministries, state governments, local bodies, etc.

Mr. Sharma has participated in a number of workshops and programmes across India and abroad and lectured extensively on conservation and world heritage matters. He has a number of publications to his credit that includes a book “Architectural Heritage, Ladakh” published by INTACH. He has done extensive architectural documentation of monasteries in Ladakh and Zangskar. Mr. Sharma is a keen traveler and an avid amateur architectural photographer. He writes on poetry that revolves around monuments, architecture, nature and life.
