Prof P K Biswas

Introduction

Prof. Biswas is known as an institution builder having 42 years’ experience in academics. Before joining Jagran Lakecity University, JLU, Bhopal, as ice Chancellor, he was a founding faculty member of Indian Institute of Forest Management, IIFM, Bhopal, an autonomous institution of the Government of India, (incubated & mentored y IIM, Ahmedabad) where he served for 30 years. He has been the Director of two national-level business schools, namely Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi, and Institute for Financial Management & Research, Chennai. He set up a new campus of IFMR Business School at Sricity. He is the Founding Vice Chancellor of Skyline University, Nigeria. He was also Dean at IMT Ghaziabad, a premier business school of the country.

 Prof Biswas has led several institutions for national and international accreditation, like AACSB, SAQS & NBA. He is well-versed with regulatory institutions, having worked with both government & private sector institutions. To his credit, Prof Biswas has 55+ research projects, 52 research papers, and 6 books. He had consulting assignments with the World Bank, ADB, JICA, SIDA, UN agencies & several other international agencies and both the Government of India and State Governments. His research focus areas are: public policy, rural finance, corporate social responsibility & sustainability, ESG, social entrepreneurship, micro finance and livelihoods, development management, civil society & NGO management, and participatory management. 

He holds Master’s Degree in Sociology (JNU, Delhi) & Ph. D in Sociology (Utkal University)

He has several certifications on Development Management.

He is member of several national and international professional institutions. He has been awarded extensively for his leadership in academics and research activities, notable among them are: - 

  • Times of India group awarded as “Educator” and “Trail Blazers 2014”. 
  • Gold award for “Academic Leadership in Research “at IIM Ahmedabad in the year 2016. 
  • Citation for ‘100 Most Dedicated professors’ by World Education Congress in 2018. 
  • Award for the work on ‘Cutting Edge work in preparing Talent for the Future” at the 4th edition of Industry-Academic Conference in 2020. 
  • Awarded the “Social Impact Leader Award” in India CSR conclave at Pune on 17th Dec,2023. 
  • Recognised as a Peer Reviewer for South Asian Quality Systems (SAQS) Accreditation, April,2024

Research, Consulting, and Development Projects

Prof. Biswas’s career is hallmarked by a sustained engagement in research and consulting for a broad spectrum of clients, which includes central and state governments, international development agencies (World Bank, ADB, DFID, JICA, UNICEF, SIDA, Ford Foundation), NGOs, and private sector organizations. He has completed more than 55 significant field and research projects encompassing:

  • Management of Common Property Resources (Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India)
  • Participatory Forest Management (World Bank, Government Agencies)
  • Industrial Plantation Socio-economic Dimensions (Asian Development Bank)
  • Rural Livelihoods, Microfinance and Social Entrepreneurship (DFID, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme India)
  • Watershed and sustainable agriculture projects (Catholic Relief Service, Govt. of MP, PRADAN, World Vision)
  • Evaluation and perspective planning for districts and interventions (AYUSH, SHGs, Planning and Coordination Departments, National Medicinal Plant Board)
  • Climate Vulnerability and Sustainable Development Studies (RCNAEB, IIFM, IFMR)
  • Review of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, skill development initiatives, and host of impact assessments for NGOs and international agencies

These projects spanned research and consultancy on topics such as natural resource management, rural development, public policy, social protection, environment, corporate governance, and livelihoods of marginalized communities.

Research and Academic Programs

Prof Biswas’s research interests focus on public policy, development management, sustainability, rural finance, corporate social responsibility, ESG, social entrepreneurship, microfinance, social protection, and participatory management. He is the founder of the Centre of Livelihood Management (IIFM, Bhopal), recognised for advancing training, research, and documentation in livelihoods and natural resource management.

His academic leadership involved:

  • Designing and implementing doctoral (Ph.D. and FPM), postgraduate (PGDM/MBA), M.Phil., and undergrad programs at multiple institutions
  • Initiating faculty research seminars, collaborative research consortia (with global partners like MIT, Harvard, Yale, Warsaw School of Business), and integrating practice-led research approaches
  • Securing institutional and programmatic accreditations: AACSB (IMT), SAQS (IMT & IFMR), NBA, and national/international research recognition.

Publication and Editorial Contributions

Prof. Biswas is highly prolific, having to his credit 52 research papers published in reputed journals and edited volumes, and 6 books/edited collections on themes of sustainable development, forestry, environment, business management, and public policy.
