Vertul Singh holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication. He was commissioned in the Indian Army and left as a Captain when he was selected for the CISF in the 1994 batch of UPSC. Apart from his other assignments, he has served as a spokesperson for the U.N. Police in Kosovo, and has also been on deputation to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Vertul is currently posted in a senior position with the Government of India.
An avid reader and literary critic, Vertul’s published works include Ek Goona Bekhudi, a critically acclaimed novel, in addition to many short stories published in prominent Hindi magazines. Two of his stories, ‘Bafliaz Ki Kaneez’ and ‘Sitaaron Pe Daalti Hoon Main Kamand’ ' Sitaram se Sikandar' have been published in the prestigious anthologies of selected Hindi short stories ‒ Katha Madhya Pradesh , Katha Desh and Pakshdhar respectively. He also has over 200 articles and book reviews to his credit and has written popular weekly columns for the Bangalore Mirror and the DB Post (Bhopal), compiled into a book " Bhopalnama: Writing A City" .
Vertul has translated Nabo, a short novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez into Hindi, along with 10 of Marquez’s interviews. His Hindi translation of Geysers – a collection of correspondence of the eminent painter, Syed Haider Raza – for the Raza Foundation, is published by Rajkamal Prakashan.
He has also written dialogues and screenplay for a number of mythological television serials. Currently working on a compendium of Hindi literature of the Twentieth-Century, Vertul has keen interest in music, culture and parallel cinema, besides literature. His latest book " Banaras : A journey into the heart of the City" has recently been published by Penguin Random House India.
